How to dominate hashtags on Instagram



Ranking on hashtags can be really difficult but it is not impossible. Hashtags can be tricky but not impossible, ranking on them has always been a daydream as well as a nightmare to all Instagrammers.


Results of not using the right hashtag sets

  • No hashtag ranking
  • 0 Hashtag reach
  • No extra reach
  • Slow/No growth
  • Low/Null explore page views

I somehow managed to get away and overcome this curse and rank better on my hashtags.

How did I do that?

Here are a few things to remember if you want to dominate the hashtag game.


1) Understand the real problem

The algorithm is not anyone's enemy, nor does it work against anything its only working for its benefits and understanding that and giving the algorithm what it asks for is the real thing you must focus on.


2) Using the right hashtag sets

Instagram deals with several hashtags every single day and it is obvious that the algorithm is smart enough to know and judge the relevancy of your hashtags.

So don't try to trick the algorithm instead pay with it and use only those hashtags that are relevant to your content.


3)Use the hashtag ladder strategy

What is a hashtag ladder strategy?

Using hashtags in a ladder-like structure to rank on all small medium and hard hashtags.


STEP 1

Calculate the average engagement rate on your posts.

Engagement rate can be calculated differently but here is a simple way to do it it is not perfect not even near perfect but it should do the trick.

ENGAGEMENT RATE = AVG.LIKES = AVG.COMMENT


STEP 2

Now make 3 sets of hashtags containing 25 hashtags each containing three different difficulty levels.

  • easy
  • medium
  • hard

How to classify hashtags as easy medium and hard?

Let me explain this with an example,

Now imagine, I get an average of 50 likes and 50 comments on an average on my posts and thus my engagement rate according to the formula I discussed earlier is 100.

So,

Any hashtags that require you half the engagement rate to rank on top are easy 

ie 0.5X100=50 easy

Any hashtags that require you the same amount of engagement rate to rank on top are medium 

ie 1.0X100=100 medium

Any hashtags that require you 1.5 times the engagement rate to rank on top are hard

ie 1.5X100=150 hard 


Use this rule/strategy to do your hashtag research and I'm sure that you will find results for sure.

  • Use relevant hashtags
  • Know your competition
  • Don't use all 30 hashtags
  • Focus more on engagement
  • Maintain consistency with hashtags
  • Use hashtags of all sizes
  • Consider using a hashtag ladder strategy
  • Use more easy, medium hashtags than hard
  • Don't coy paste hashtags
  • Experiment-ExperimentExperiment
